He was born on February 16, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario to Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye Ethiopians by birth who immigrated to Canada in the 1980s. His parents got divorced and as a result of that stayed with his grandmother. During his upbringing, he learnt how to speak Amharic and attended church services. The early years of his life were miserable as he was addicted to drugs such as cocaine and marijuana.

After High school, he went on to study at West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute though he didn’t graduate as he dropped out to pursue his career in music.

Career

In 2010, The Weeknd began his career with the help of music producer Jereme Rose who helped him produced his first album which included songs like “What You Need”, “Loft Music”, and “The Morning”. Towards the end of 2010, he uploaded his songs on YouTube using his professional name ”The Weeknd”.  His songs received lots of views and trended on twitter.

In 2011, he released a mixtape House of Balloons that received mixed reviews from people. That same year he began his tour of Toronto where he was privileged to meet popular star Drake who was impressed by his work. This led to him being featured in some of Drake’s shows. He also assisted Drake on his Take Care album.

In 2011, he also released more mixtapes ‘Thursday’ and ‘Echoes of Silence’ which gave him attention from record labels and later got signed to Republic records. He began his second musical tour in 2012 with a tour of the United States and parts of Europe. On the 12th of September 2013, released the album ‘Kiss Land’ which had hit singles ‘Belong to the World’ and ‘Live For’. The album went on top US Billboard chart and sold thousands of copies. 

He blossomed in his career and collaborated with top stars Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. In 2015, he released another song ‘The Hills’ and ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ that topped Billboard chart and made waves across the world. In 2016, he released his third album ‘Starboy’ which won awards, top charts and sold millions of copies.
