Tara Lipinski was born on June 10, 1982, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Patricia (née Brozyniak) and Jack Lipinski. She grew up in Washington Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Tara began testing the ice in 1988 at just 6. She got involved in her first major competition in the 1990 Eastern Regional Championships for roller skating where she ended second. Tara competed in the United States Roller Skating Championships the following year and won the primary girls freestyle as a nine-year-old. She moved with her family to Sugar Land, Texas.
