She was brought up as a Roman Catholic. As a matter of fact, Susan attended Roman Catholic schools.

In the first place, she graduated from Edison High School in 1964 before proceeding to the Catholic University of America from 1964 to 1968 and achieved a BA in drama.

She worked with a famous drama coach and master teacher, Father Gilbert V. Hartke.

After her graduation from college, Susan began her acting career in 1970 with a role in the movie Joe, as a disaffected teen.
