Life and Career
Born William Robinson Jr. to a poor family in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were of African-American and French. He got the name Smokey from his uncle Claude.
Smokey studied at Northern High School. Academically he was sound but he had a passion for music that led him to form a music group Five Chimes. He drew his inspiration from Nolan Strong & the Diablos, Billy Ward and His Dominoes.
The group Five Chimes was originally composed of Smokey Robinson, Ronald White and Pete Moore with Bobby Rogers, Marv Tarplin and Claudette Rogers joining later. The group’s name was changed to Matadors and finally renamed Miracles.
Robinson was studying electrical engineering in college but dropped out after the group released their first single. The single was titled “Got a Job“. Miracles had to work with songwriter Berry Gordy who assisted them to produce the single.

Gordy got the Miracles signed to his record label Motown Records. Under Motown, the Miracles released hit songs that sold millions of records. Some of their hit songs include ‘I Second That Emotion’, ”You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me“, and “The Tracks of My Tears“.
In 1972, Smokey took a musical break during which he held the position of vice president of Motown records. He made a comeback the next year this time a solo artist and released his first album titled Smokey.
He has gone on to release other songs and single during the course of his over forty years career.
Smokey Robinson got married to Claudette Rogers in 1959 and they both had a son Berry Robinson and a daughter Tamla Robinson. He filed for a divorce in 1986 after he admitted engaging in an extramarital affair with a lady named Trey that produced a son.
He later got married to fashion designer Frances Gladney in 2002 and they currently reside in Pittsburgh in a house and have a winery in it.
