Ralph May is a famous American standup comedian, writer, actor, and producer famous for appearing in shows like The Wayne Brady Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Ralph Duren May was born on February 17, 1972, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. His mother was a florist and he had 3 older siblings. Ralph grew up in Clarksville, Arkansas and attended the School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas.

Ralph had always wanted to be a comedian. Fortunately, the opportunity came knocking after he won a contest which was organised by comedian Sam Kinison, who was Ralphie’s role model.

Kinison advised Ralphie to move to Houston, Texas so he could develop his career as a comedian.

In 2003, Ralph participated in the first season of American reality show Last Comic Standing but ended up in second place behind Dat Phan who won that season.

After that, he made several appearances in comedy shows which include The Wayne Brady Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Ralphie also performed in the Big Black Comedy Show in 2005, and he was the only white comedian to perform among other comic acts such as Mo’Nique, Rodman and Vince Morris.

He released his album titled Just Correct in 2005, and ever since, Ralphie has made a total of seven Comedy Central specials which includes: Girth of a Nation (2006), Prime Cut (2007), Austin-tatious (2008), Too Big to Ignore (2012). Imperfectly Yours (2013) and Unruly (2015).

Aside from his standups and audio recordings, Ralphie has also made a series of movie appearances such as For Da Love of Money (2002) and performed at the 2012 Gathering of the Juggalos.

Personal Life

Ralphie has two children with his wife Lahna Turner, a fellow comedian who he first met during an open mic night event in Houston and both dated afterwards.

They got married in 2005 but the marriage lasted for ten years before both decided to file for divorce but it didn’t go through. May had an issue with obesity as a teenager which transcended to his adult life. At a point in time, he was weighing over 350kg and had to undergo surgery to reduce his weight.

May suffered from pneumonia and finally died on the 6th of October 2017 from heart failure at the age of 45. Before his death, he had shows and events to attend but couldn’t due to his ailing health. Most of his colleagues including the likes of Kevin Hart and Steve Harvey paid tribute to him.
