Born on the 5th of October 1958 in Manhattan, New York to Cyril deGrasse Tyson and Sunchita Maria Tyson of Puerto Rican descent. We could say that his family was science inclined as his father was a sociologist and his mother gerontologist. Tyson lived with his parents and two brothers Stephen Joseph Tyson and Lynn Antipas Tyson in the Bronx but later relocated to Riverdale.
Tyson started his education in the Bronx but continued it at Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy before enrolling at the Bronx High School of Science.
At the age of nine, he already had a passion for astronomy and took courses at the Hayden Planetarium. According to Tyson, it felt like the universe was calling him and he began studying astronomy on his own.
After graduation from high school, Tyson enrolled at Harvard University to study physics and obtained his degree in 1980.
However, he moved on to the University of Texas obtaining a masters degree in astronomy in the year 1983. From 1986-1987, Tyson worked as a lecturer at the University of Maryland lecturing on astronomy.
He left Maryland to obtain his MPhil and PhD degrees in astrophysics at the Colombia University in 1989 and 1991 respectively.
Upon completion of his PhD at Colombia University, went on extensive research in areas such as cosmology, galactic astronomy and stellar formation.
He also was employed by various institutions which include Hayden Planetarium and Princeton University.
He started at the Hayden Planetarium, occupying the role of staff scientist before he got promoted to assistant director and was finally made the director in 1996. During his time as director, he supervised a reconstruction project worth over $200 million.
Tyson has written many books which include books Death by Black Hole (2007) and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry (2017).
