Early Life and Education

Full name Laurence Tero Tureaud was born on the 21st of May 1952 in Chicago, Illinois to Nathaniel Tureaud. Tero has seven brothers and four sisters and they together grew up together with their father who was a minister. His father later left them leaving the mother to cater to them.

This resulted in him developing a closer relationship with his mother. He loved football and played regularly even as a student of Dunbar Vocational High School. Apart from football, he also loved wrestling as he loved participating in wrestling competitions.

His footballing skills gained him a scholarship to study mathematics at Prairie View A&M University but he wasn’t able to obtain a degree as he got expelled on just a year.

A career in the army

Upon his expulsion, he got enlisted in the United States Army. He performed excellently during training and was made a squadron leader but a misunderstanding with some superiors led to him been discharged from the army.

After leaving the army, he tried going back to playing football but his career was cut short by a knee injury so he finally gave up on the chance of becoming a footballer.

As a Bouncer and Bodyguard

With a military background, Tero decided to become a bouncer and used the moniker Mr. T so as to mask his name and gain a bit of respect. During his bouncing days, he had lots of pieces of jewelry which according to him was lost by customers or left after a fight.

As a bouncer, he got into hundreds of fight losing none and was often sued thereafter but was able to prove his innocence as most of the fights were as a result of him preventing violence from escalating.

Bouncer turned Bodyguard

His status as a bouncer grew and he soon turned to a bodyguard. He was contracted to guard prostitutes, actors, preachers, politicians, and musicians. Notable names he has worked as a bodyguard for include Michael Jackson, Steve McQueen, Diana Ross, and Mohammed Ali.

He charged a minimum of $3,000 per day and his name rang among bodyguards as he was one of the best.

His hairstyle was gotten from a National Geographic article about a Mandinka warrior, he loved the Mandinka warrior hairstyle and decided to adopt it.

As an actor and Wrestler

Everything changed for Tero when he met Sylvester Stallone during NBC’s “America’s Toughest Bouncer” competition. Stallone gave him the role of Clubber Lang in his movie Rocky III (1982). The movie grossed over $100 million and made Tero famous.

He adopted the phrase ‘I pity the fool‘ and made an appearance in the movie Penitentiary 2. Tero finally got his biggest role till date in the movie The A-Team where he played as Sergeant Bosco “B. A.” Baracus.

He entered into the world of wrestling and worked with the popular Hulk Hogan as his tag team partner. He also has an album to his name titled Mr. T’s Commandments (Columbia / CBS Records) which he released in 1984.

Mr. T career declined after he was diagnosed with T-cell Lymphoma a form of cancer. He currently engages in commercial, reality shows and devotes time to his family and religion.

Mr. T no longer wears pieces of jewelry as he has given his life to Christ which means he is a Christian to the core. He has a son who is a comedian and two daughters.
