Born as Michael Lee Moorer on the 12th day in the month of November 1967 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up with just his mother in Pennsylvania.
As a child, he so much loved playing football but his grandfather a former boxer felt his could channel his footballing energy into boxing and began training him at the age of 11.

He attended Monessen High school and graduated in 1987. While in school despite been taught boxing, he still joined the school’s football team.
After some time learning under his grandfather, he felt that it was time to take a big step towards his career so he relocated to Detroit to train under Emanuel Steward a legend in the world of boxing.
Moorer competed in various amateur boxing competitions and won. He also surprisingly fought against some professionals and won.
In 1988, Moorer began his career as a professional boxer in the light heavyweight category with a match against Adrian Riggs which ended with Riggs on the ground in just the first round.
Moorer went on to defeat his next set of opponents winning the WBO light heavyweight titles and was able to defend it on several occasions before he moved to the heavyweight division.
His biggest match in the heavyweight division was against Bert Cooper which he won in the fifth round winning the WBO heavyweight belt.
In 1994 Moorer went on to unify the heavyweight championship when he challenged the IBF and WBA title champion Evander Holyfield. The match was a feisty affair as opponents fell to the ground but in the end, Moorer won.
