Early Life

Born Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov on the 20th of September 1988 in a small village in Tsumadinsky District of the Dagestan ASSR in the USSR.

Together with his parents and two siblings Magomed and Amina, Nurmagomedov had his upbringing in Makhachkala before later moving to Ukraine.

Nurmagomedov before the age of eight had already started learning wrestling against humans and bears under the tutelage of his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov a soldier and athlete.

Following his father’s advice, he made a difficult transition from wrestling to judo so as to compete in tournaments.

He lived as a fighter and on a regular basis he will deliberately get into a fight in the streets to test his might and it isn’t a surprise he won most of them.

With time he felt he could do better in mixed martial arts than in judo and finally made that switch.


In September 2008, he had his first professional mixed martial arts match which he won comfortably. Within a space of 30 days, he was in four fights winning them all. His winning of the Atrium Cup in Moscow announced him to the world of mixed martial arts.

From 2008 up to 2011, he participated in sixteen fights winning all mostly by technical knockout TKO or through submission. This exploit of his what was earned him a promotion to UFC.

In 2012, he had his first UFC fight against Kamal Shalorus and won in the third round via submission. He went on to win his next three matches against Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, and Abel Trujillo.

It became obvious to many that he had come to stay as most of his matches had to be cancelled as his opponents feared him.

In 2018, he went for the UFC Lightweight Championship taking on Al Laquinta. The match looked more like a misfit as Nurmagomedov controlled the fight from the beginning to the end giving Laqinta a proper beating.

The icing of the cake was when he defended his title against Conor McGregor in August of 2018. The match had the highest pay-per-view for a mixed martial art match as there were 2.4 million pay-per-view buys.

Nurmagomedov went on to win the match defeating McGregor via submission in the fourth round thereby retaining his belt.
