Born as Judith Mary Erskine in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire to Eileen Shirley (née Edney) and Roy Erskine. Her parents were into sports especially football but she preferred lawn tennis and decided to pursue a career in it.

Then in Scotland, there were no indoor courts and she had only the summer to play tennis. During the beginning of her career playing against the likes of Debbie Jevans and Mariana Simionescu won over 64 titles which prompted her to go professional but gave up the idea after been robbed in Barcelona, Spain.

She decided to further her education and obtained a degree in Business Studies and French from the University of Edinburgh in 1981.

Upon graduation, began her coaching career as she coached both sons of hers James and Andy Murray at the beginning of their career but left when they went professional.

Thereafter she became a regular face at Broomhill Lawn Tennis and Squash club both as a player and instructor winning various competitions.

Joining the British tennis governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) gave her the opportunity of coaching many players in different cadres of lawn tennis division.

On getting the role of captain of the British Fed Cup team in 2011 improved her profile among female tennis coaches in the country but after five years resigned her position for someone else to occupy.

Judy has five honorary doctorates two of which she received in 2013 from the University of Edinburgh and from the University of Stirling. The other three was received in 2016 from the University of Aberdeen, University of Glasgow, and from Abertay University.
