Early Life

John Wayne was born as Marion Robert Morrison on the 26th of May, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. His father was Clyde Leonard Morrison l, a Pharmacist, and his grandfather was an American war hero Marion Mitchell Morrison, and his mother, Mary “Molly” Alberta Brown was from Lancaster County.

He grew up in Palmdale, Northern California before his family moved to Glendale in California.
John attended the Wilson Middle School in Glendale and was also a member of the Order of DeMolay, an offshoot of the Freemasons.

He studied at the Glendale High School and also played football for them. He was the President of Latin Society and made contributions to the newspaper sports column of the school.

John applied to serve in the US Navy but got rejected by the US Naval Academy. He got a sports scholarship to the University of Southern California in 1925. Sadly, due to injury, he had to quit sports, and so, had the scholarship fund withdrawn and eventually quitting the University.

Career

John Wayne made his debut big role appearance in the 1930 film, The Big Trail. The movie failed to achieve commercial success and so John had to settle for smaller roles in films and TV shows.

After much struggle throughout the early and mid-’30s, John got his big breakthrough in the 1939 film, Stagecoach directed by John Ford.

Following the commercial success of the movie, John became a name popular in Holywood. A year after, he appeared in the movie ‘The Long Voyage Home’ which further raised his prominence as an A-list actor.

John went on to star in a series of movies which include The Red River (1948), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). John Wayne also made guest appearances on different radio programs like The Hedda Hopper Show and The Louella Parsons Show.

Personal Life

John has been married three times, divorced twice. His first wife was Josephine Alisia Saenz, and his second wife was Esperanza Baur and third was Pilar Pallete. He and his first wife Josephine had four children together and three with the second wife.

Most of his children have entered the entertainment industry today. John’s third wife Pilar was an enthusiastic tennis player and she encouraged him to develop the John Wayne Tennis Club in 1973.

Today, the club is known as Tennis Club in Newport Beach, CA. John Wayne passed away on the 11 of June 1979. The cause of his death was stomach cancer. He died at the UCLA Medical Center. The John Wayne Cancer Foundation was established in 1985 to honour and immortalize him.
