Full name Arthur Ian Lavender was born on the 16th of February 1946 in Birmingham, England. Information about his parents is unknown as there are to records to that effect.

He began acting as a student of Bourneville Boys Technical School and was exceptionally gifted which caught the attention of many.

Lavender first appeared on television in a 1968 play entitled Half Hour Story: Flowers at my Feet. That year he got his breakthrough as he was given the role of Private Pike in the BBC sitcom Dad’s Army. Private Pike was a character who exhibited stupidity and is the youngest member of a platoon.

The role made Lavender famous as he became a household name and was also privileged as a newcomer to work and learn from top actors in the industry.

He also appeared as Private Pike in the BBC sequel of Dad’s Army named It Sticks Out Half a Mile which ran for a year.

Upon the conclusion of Dad’s Army, he returned to stage acting and performed in a Shakespearean play The Merchant of Venice. In the early 1970s, he took part of the BBC radio comedy Parsley Sidings that ran from 1971-1973.

From the 1980s, Lavender appeared in a number of comedy series which include Yes Minister, The Hello Goodbye Man (1984), Cluedo (1990) and 1988 BBC children’s animation PC Pinkerton.
