Early Life

His full name is Dennis Keith Rodman and he came to our world on the 13th of May 1961 in Trenton, New Jersey to parents Shirley and Philander Rodman, Jr. who are war veterans.

His parents had 47 children and he had no fatherly care as he didn’t see his father for over 30 years staying most with his mother.

He grew up with two of his siblings in Oak Cliff section of Dallas regarded as one of the poorest parts of the city.

As the only male in a house full of females, he became so attached to his mother that some may be referred to him as mommy’s boy.

He studied at South Oak Cliff High School and later went to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The time he spent at home before gaining admission to college was the period he used to start his professional career.

He was so good at it that he had an average of 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds. While at the university, he became the best rebounder in all of America’s tertiary institutions.

He competed in various of the school tournament and won various awards which gathered him some attentions from NBA clubs.

Career

Rodman’s career began in 1986 as he was drafted to the Detroit Pistons and began by playing but wasn’t a regular under coach Chuck Daly whose team went on to 1987 playoffs but lost to the Boston Celtics in an intense match.

After the match, he went on to make racist comments about Boston’s player Larry Bird which gathered him some criticisms.

The next season, rodman got more playing time due to his improved performance and the team went on to the NBA finals of 1988 but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. Some felt that rodman’s performance was one of the reasons the pistons lost though such a statement is highly debatable.

With the transfer of Pistons main defensive forward Rick Mahorn, Rodman became a regular from the 1989 season to 1993.

His first season as a regular witnessed an improvement in his performance and received an award for that. Rodman had his best spell at the Detroit Pistons during the 1991-1992 season when he broke record becoming the second player to have the highest rebound in the NBA history.

He also went on to be named in the NBA all-stars first team. In 1992, his performance dropped drastically due to family issues and once contemplated suicide. With the departure of his mentor and coach Chuck Daly, rodman left for the San Antonio Spurs in 1993.

The addition of Rodman to the San Antonio Spurs team was like the final piece of the puzzle as the team already had star names like David Robinson, Dale Ellis, Willie Anderson and Vinny Del Negro.

Rodman didn’t meet the high expectations placed on him and as a result, his team lost to Utah Jazz in the playoffs in 1994.

He left for the Chicago Bulls in 1995 coached by Phil Jackson. He had an outstanding season but it was cut short by injury.

In 1996, his team finally won the NBA finals beating Seattle Supersonic in just six games.

He had his best individual career when he signed for the Los Angeles Lakers as he had a better defensive and rebound score.

He has since retired from the game and was inducted into the basketball history.

How did he amass such wealth?

It is surprising for someone who earned over $25 million as salary, endorsements worth millions and special allowance worth millions during his playing days would be worth just $0.5 million.

The truth is that he lived a lavish life and spent lots of money. He was charged to court for owing close to a million dollars.

As of 2019, Dennis Rodman net worth is estimated $0.5 million.
