Born as William Henry Gates III on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington to William H. Gates and Mary Maxwell Gates. He has an English, Irish and German descent. At a young age, his parents wanted him to study law but he had a habit of always staying indoors and engaging his thoughts.
At age 13, he got enrolled in Lakeside School where he took interest in writing computer programs. His first program was one that allowed game users to compete against the computer. The success of the program motivated him to learn more about executing software codes perfectly as he had a penchant for perfection.

While using a computer owned by Computer Centre Cooperation (CCC) together with his friends were caught trying to exploit bugs in their system so as gain more computer time. This action of theirs led a ban. After the ban, CCC offered them the opportunity to discover bugs in their software in exchange for free computer time. This gave him the opportunity to learn and run other programs such as FORTRAN and LISP. Gates graduated from Lakeside school in 1973 and had a remarkable SAT score of 1590 out of 1600 a feat most persons are yet to attain academically. From there on, he went to study at Harvard University but dropped out after two years to pursue his programming career and start his company.

Gates in partnership with his friend Paul Allen started Microsoft a name gotten from microcomputers and software with a goal of placing a computer in every home. The Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code (BASIC) software was the first product of the company that ran on Altair computers.
In 1980, they had their first major breakthrough when they had a deal with IBM to build an operating system that will work on their new brand computers. After developing the software for IBM it was sold for $50,000 though Microsoft still retained the copyrights.

In 1985, Microsoft launched the popular ‘Microsoft Windows’ that have gone to be a huge success worldwide as it is been pre-installed in most PCs.
