Anthony Michael Bourdain was born on June 25, 1956, in New York City. The first of two children born to Pierre and Gladys Bourdain. Pierre, his father is of French descent while his mother Gladys is a Jew. He grew up in a Catholic family but wasn’t religious as he didn’t believe in a higher power. His father worked as a floor manager at a record store before he became an executive board member while his mother worked at the New York Times as an editor. Anthony grew up learning French culture and cuisine. During a family vacation in France, Anthony developed a love for food when he tasted oysters on a fisherman’s boat.
He studied at Dwight-Englewood School and later went on to Vassar College to further his studies but had to drop out and pursue his career as a chef.
In 1978, he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America which gave him the needed foundation for his career. Upon graduation, he fully ventured into his profession as he worked at Supper Club, One-Fifth Avenue, and Sullivan’s all based in New York City.
He had his biggest breakthrough when he started working with Brasserie Les Halles a brand that had branches in Washington DC, Tokyo and Miami but with headquarters in Manhattan, New York. He worked there for several years before finally leaving them but still maintained a good relationship with the brand.
Apart from been a chef, he has also written lots of books which includes A Cook’s Tour (2001), The Nasty Bits (2006), Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (2000) and Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook (2010). His books joined the list of New York Times Bestseller, made lots of sales and even gave him Awards.
He spiced up his career as he took it forward by becoming a celebrity chef.
